Geriant Institution: Why VitalHealth and Accenture?

Geriant is a Mental Health institution (GGz) in the Dutch province of North Holland, with a progressive view on providing care to dementia patients.

Expectations
Geriant has contracted VitalHealth and Accenture for the development of a new electronic medical record with the expectation that it will:
  • support active participation in the care process by the patient and the patient's immediate circle of friends and relatives involved in their care;
  • facilitate the expected transition to participation in integrated care delivery networks;
  • reduce the administrative overhead for the medical professional and reduce the potential for errors in the registration process;
  • support the medical professional in driving and monitoring the care process conform the requirements established by the EMR reference model of the GGz (Mental Health Netherlands) institute.

Selection process
Geriant followed a well defined selection process before making their choice for the new VitalHealth and Accenture initiative. The institute could have chosen an existing administrative product, but that would not have served the intention to improve the actual care process. This led to the unanimous decision by Geriant and their advisors to select the new EMR of VitalHealth and Accenture.

Drivers for choosing the VitalHealth/Accenture EMR
Some of the drivers were:
  • The stability and the future proof architecture of the state-of-the-art VitalHealth Platform, that has already proven itself as a foundation for EMRs for other healthcare sectors.
  • The proven success of Accenture in developing and implementing software solutions in the healthcare industry and beyond;
  • The ability to contribute to the design of a new and generic mental EMR that can be used for multiple mental health conditions, developed based on the needs of end users;
  • A favorable price / quality ratio.

Status April 2010
The development of the EMR is in full swing and on track. Both parties focus on their own strength areas and deliver accordingly. The development is based on the concept of shorter development tracks for parts of the care process, where each part is individually designed, developed, tested and delivered. It has proven to be a productive cooperation so far.

In the mean time, Geriant is working on the implementation aspects of the project, including e.g. end user training planned for the fall of 2010.

The project has seen a strong interest from both other GGz groups as well as non-GGz parties on a national level.
