VitalHealth succesfully completes EMR-IDN integration test
Together with three partners, VitalHealth Software has successfully completed an integration test for the exchange of information between family practice physician information systems and Integrated care Delivery Network systems using an open communication standard.

Physician Information System (HIS) providers Promedico ICT B.V. and PharmaPartners B.V. together with IDN software (KIS) providers VitalHealth Software B.V and Portavita B.V. have successfully completed a test phase of the Dutch HIS-KIS communication standard.

The completion of the test phase is an important first step towards the exchange of information between HIS and KIS systems based on an open communication standard. The HIS-KIS communication standard is an important contributor to ensuring that patient medical records are complete and synchronized between family practice physician information systems (HIS) and Integrated care Delivery Network software systems (KIS), avoiding the need for double data entry.

Lab test environment
The integration tests were done in a lab test environment. All four parties involved focused on the exchange of patient specific data related to diabetes care. The main goal of the test was to validate the design of the technical and functional components of the HIS-KIS communication standard. The HIS-KIS standard is based on HL7v3 message exchange, with a specific focus on the so-called Care Provision Model of the HL7v3 standard. Given the vast differences between various information systems, each using their own data definition and format, the use of standardized formatting and interpretation of data is crucial to a successful data exchange. For that reason, the message definitions in the HIS-KIS standard ensure semantic interoperability as well.

Single sign-on functionality
The scope of the initial test phase also included single-sign on functionality. With this functionality, users that are logged in to the HIS are seamlessly and transparently logged into the KIS as well, with user specific access control to the relevant data in the KIS. This avoids the need for the physician to log in to two separate systems.

Next steps in project
The next phase of the HIS-KIS project consists of completing the test version to a production-ready version, to be implemented at the first pilot site within a care network. Besides that, the relationship between the HIS-KIS standard and the NICTIZ e-Diabetes program will be coordinated with NICTIZ. The expectation is that the HIS-KIS standard will be market ready sometime in 2011.

Advantages of the HIS-KIS standard
The HIS-KIS communication standard is a generic and flexible model that enables communication partners to anticipate the desired data exchange within a care network, avoiding repeated and time-consuming development projects. This is a vast improvement over currently available mechanisms that are largely based on fixed data definitions and formats. The HIS-KIS communication model not only allows for the exchange of care information, but will in the future also support the exchange of administrative and management data within a care network.
