EHR-IDN integration based on OZIS standard operational in Friesland
VitalHealth Software and IDN (Integrated care Delivery Network) Friesland have successfully implemented bi-directional EHR-IDN integrations at a large number of primary care practices in Friesland– a province of the Netherlands.
The integrations involve the VitalHealth IDN solution and a diverse set of small practices EHRs used throughout Friesland, such as Medicom, Promedico-VDF, MIRA, MicroHIS and OmniHIS. The OZIS based integration has led to a complete and robust data set in both the IDN solution as well as the EHRs. Friesland is believed to be the first province with a large number of practices using an integrated IDN-EHR solution. Besides the EHRs used throughout Friesland, OZIS based integrations have also been implemented for Labelsoft, HetHIS and TetraHIS.
The primary condition for IDN Friesland in selecting an IDN solution was the ability to use the OZIS message format. This allows practices to fully utilize the information already available in their EHRs, with both current and historical patient data.
IDN Friesland Manager Durkje Visser points out that it was especially important for all involved parties to fully commit to the OZIS message format: “We realized before we started that we would be a major adopter of OZIS, given the large number of diverse EHRs in our region. Typically, regional infrastructures require a unique solution with a high emphasis on frequent communication. We must admit that it took us more time and effort than initially expected. However, through a determined joint effort between the involved EHR vendors, VitalHealth and our own organization, we successfully completed the project.”
“This project in Friesland has given us a solid base of experience based on which we can continue to realize such important integration projects”, says Laurens van der Tang, COE of VitalHealth Software. “This is probably the first time in the Netherlands that the OZIS standard has been implemented on such a large scale. Besides that, for many of the involved EHRs it is the first time that the OZIS standard has been used in practice. The outstanding effort of both IDN Friesland and the EHR vendors helped us in bringing this project to a successful completion.”
Vitalhealth is the first IDN solution vendor to provide OZIS based integrations to virtually all available small practices EHRs in the Netherlands. The OZIS standard is currently the de facto communication standard in the Netherlands for bidirectional exchange of data between IDN systems, addressing a crucial need for information exchange between care providers in integrated care delivery networks.
